A day in the life – Ben Brookman

One of our core values is based on building trust.

Trust between colleagues, suppliers and customers alike. We believe that one of the key elements of building trust is in developing relationships, particularly being able to put a face to a name.

So in the coming weeks and months, we will feature members of the CDL team. These articles will not only demonstrate who we are as an employer, but will give you an insight into how we work as a business.

We hope you will enjoy these short, but sweet, articles about our great team.

Ben Brookman, Apple and Mobile Device Supervisor

Ben started his working life out of college as a brick layer and didn’t really know what he wanted to do. He got a job working for CDL 8 ½ years ago and says he’s “never looked back.”

Ben said, “I really fell on my feet when I got the job at CDL, I’ve learnt a lot over the years and the company has really looked after me.”

Ben started in General Assetting which involves going through all incoming ‘assets’ or recycled items, progressing to processing servers, PCs, laptops and now he is the Supervisor of the Apple and Mobile Department.

Developing an understanding about how each of these electrical products works and being able to be responsive to a demanding workload are essential skills for him to do the job well.

He has seen a lot of change in his time with the company, most notably the move to CDL House on Davy Road, to a purpose-built facility which offered better working conditions for everybody.

His typical day starts anywhere between 6am – 8am but Ben works as long as he needs to in order to get the job done. He manages an apprentice, repairing laptops, sorting jobs, liaising with the manager of the Laptop Department to see what work load they have.

Repairing devices is the more technical aspect of the role and Ben is largely self-taught and very confident in this area. He manages the repairs, outgoing orders and ensures the reports are consistently processed in a timely manner.

We asked him what he likes most about his job; “I love that I am left to my own devices (no pun intended) and enjoy the autonomy, I wouldn’t entertain leaving the company.”

He does have to go home at some point though and when he does, he spends his time with his girlfriend and dog Ralph. He loves the great outdoors and riding his mountain bike.
